It was an unusually hot September weekend in New England with a mixed bag of results for the first home games of the Pioneer season.

The D team started things early with their home opener at 8am against the Gloucester Fishermen.  In a tightly contested match with lots of great defense on both sides of the ball, the Fishermen found the end zone early and were able to hold onto an 8-0 lead for the game.  Great efforts by Chloe Bergeron, Chase Buoniconti and Lucas Deraps were made on both sides of the ball.

The JVC team was successful in their first game of the season.  After a slow start, the team scored on a touchdown pass in the final 16 seconds of the first half. The team added two more touchdowns in the second half.  Defensively the team was dominant with the longest play of the day for Danvers being a 5 yard run.  The final score was 20-0.  It was a great team effort.

At 11:00am, the Pioneer C team took their talents to the field hoping to improve upon their 1-0 season but ran into a strong Hamilton Wenham Generals team and fell 24-0 on the hot turf. Tyler Adamo and the offense couldn’t find their groove, allowing the Generals to keep the Pioneers off the scoreboard.

Meanwhile in Winthrop, the B team improved on its season with a tight 12-6 win against the Winthrop Vikings. With AJ Chiradona leading the way on offense and Alex Baldini contributing some strong runs, the B team was able to keep pillaging Vikings from doing any damage.  Great contributions from Cole Hawes and Jimmy Driscoll who kept the Vikings from making any big threats.

Back at LHS, the A team took the field against the Hamilton Wenham Generals in the afternoon heat.  With both teams struggling, the Generals lead 8-0 through most of the game thanks to a TE screen pass.  With stellar defensive play from Ethan Downey and James Sharkey, the Generals weren’t able to do much more during the game, but they were able to pounce on a late fumble in the waning minutes of the game to take a 16-0 lead.  Hard running by Kevin Julian on the offense and Devin Deluties were enough to move the football, but the Pioneers couldn’t fine the end zone in the heat.

Games next week include the A team playing at Masco on Saturday at 3pm, with the B team playing at LHS against Amesbury at 9am on Sunday.  All other action for the D, JVC and C will take place on Sunday at Masco at 1:15pm, 2:45pm and 4:15pm respectively.
